To create a framework of ideas, to best exploit the assets to provide a coherent visitor experience, simultaneously improving the associated public realm and linkages with the surrounding urban context. We will set out a number of design strategies that will help create and reinforce a Stockport brand and visitor experience, creating a reinvigorated urban quarter.

Working within the framework of existing spaces and buildings, introducing new spaces and buildings that revive and reinvigorate, while simultaneously encouraging them to link with new areas of public realm which together combine to form an interpretable whole.

The aim of the study will be to create an inspirational collection of ideas that demonstrate how the stations can be rejuvenated to create vibrant and active places for shoppers, business and living.

To begin with, the study will aim to provide a vision that presents an aspirational framework of ideas indicating how the Stations can be revived and exploited to deliver identifiable amenities.

To begin to set out the design principles that might underpin more detailed master plan proposals and form the basis to further elaborate on a vision for the stations. In particular, drawings and illustrations that begin to suggest how the existing different stakeholder aspirations could be translated and brought together and how spaces might be experienced.

To provide an indication of the possibilities and potential for these parts of the borough.

To review opportunities for new retail development.

To review opportunities for additional and enhanced public realm

To review linkages within the urban and suburban context.

The process will identify opportunities for public space which reflect the town’s identity and the communities’ cultural background. Places where the community gathers and “urban life” takes place even since the ancient times. They traditionally helped shape the identity of entire towns and cities and provide a range of spaces that appeal to all people. We will begin to identify amenities and attractions that make the stations more distinctive and fit for purpose.

We will begin to explore how spaces interact with each other to create a memorable journey to and from the surrounding neighbourhoods. Places that are safe and lively and to which people will return time and again. Places that are well managed and capitalise on the community’s assets, inspiration and potential.
